The Importance of Choosing the Right Wood Veneer for Your Interior Project

The full spectrum of what a space is meant to embody isn’t translated without the right materials. And while the decision making is yours as the designer and the maker of your space, guidance is the key for making the right decisions prior to installation.

We can’t stress enough the importance of understanding what separates products that look identical on paper. Similar materials can be sourced from opposite ends of the world, finished through entirely different processes and can sit in a space feeling nothing like each other. That detail, however small during the spec state, is what you and your client will be left with once the project hands over.

We’re going to explore a few of the projects that we’ve worked on, the different briefs we received for each and how we chose material to tell the story of each space.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Wood Veneer for Your Interior Project

Eywa Earth by R.Evolution

Eywa Earth by R.Evolution

Eywa is one of Dubai’s most distinctive projects to date. Different in both architecture, lifestyle and interior design, the project exemplifies regenerative architecture and acts as a holistic ecosystem. With the sole goal of creating a space for wellbeing, sustainability and community sit at the forefront of every decision made.

Those values reflect in every material choice. The facade is a flowing organic form with landscaping threading through each balcony and warm wooden surfaces running throughout. Every choice made by the team on this project serves the feeling the space was built around.

For this project, we sourced a Natural Paldao Wood Veneer Crown Cut, which runs through the cabinetry, closets, hallways and doors. The crown cut specifically gives the veneer a broad, cathedral-like grain pattern that feels warm and alive without being decorative for the sake of it.

Paldao Veneer

Paldao is sourced primarily from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, with the highest concentrations found across the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and New Guinea. The tree thrives in humid, marshy conditions along streams and forest floors and that environment is part of what gives the wood its character.

Paldao is known for its dramatic, irregular streaking, where deep browns and greys run through a lighter base in a way that is hard to replicate artificially. It has long been a material of choice in high-end furniture and architectural woodworking precisely because no two cuts are ever the same.

Bugatti Residences by Binghatti

Bugatti Residences by Binghatti

Bughatti Residences is one of Binghatti’s flagship projects and a collaboration with one of the most iconic names in automotive history. Where Bugatti the brand is known for fluid lines, precision engineering and unapologetic opulence, the building translates that same language into architecture. The facade is a showcase of distinctive craftsmanship, all movement and curvature, but with a rigidity underneath it that nods directly to the metal and mechanics of the automotive world.

In that sense, Bugatti sits at the opposite end of the spectrum from Eywa. Both buildings are fluid in form, but where Eywa is restorative and rooted in nature, Bugatti is modern, sleek and considered in a way that feels very Dubai.

For this project we supplied a Natural Oak Wood Veneer Crown Cut, used across accent walls, ceilings and cabinetry. The crown cut produces a broad, flowing grain pattern with minimal variation in shading, which was exactly what this interior needed. Light, clean and refined without being cold. It gave the spaces warmth without pulling them away from the sleek, contemporary direction the design was heading in.

White Oak Veneer

White Oak Veneer

White Oak is native to North America, grown across the forests of the United States and Canada where Quercus alba has thrived for centuries. The logs are typically sliced and processed into veneer in China before reaching markets like the UAE. It is worth knowing that what is sometimes sold as natural oak veneer is actually reconstituted or engineered veneer, made from fast-growing African timber such as Ayous, which is then processed and dyed to replicate the White Oak appearance. The two are not the same and the difference shows in a finished space.

Natural White Oak has a grain that is honest and consistent, with a quiet elegance that works across a wide range of interior styles. In a project like Bugatti Residences, where every finish is held to an extraordinary standard, that authenticity matters. A material that performs under scrutiny, in a building designed to be scrutinised.
